Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
For my capstone I have decided to work alongside Mrs. Petrillo in her Algebra I class. I will be helping out the students with their work, assisting Mrs. Petrillo with the gradebook and working in small groups when needed. I will be assisting Mrs. Petrillo during her 5th block class. I want to help the students because I have a good foundation in math and I want to share my knowledge and strategies with the students that might be struggling with some concepts that I did when I was in their grade. Also, I love Mrs. Petrillo and I want to be able to give back to her for all she did for me during my freshman year.
My research question for my capstone project is: How is tutoring and one to one help beneficial to students in their math classes? This question relates to my project directly because in the math classes, students need extra help to master their skills. I think that helping the students during their class will help them improve their grades and give them the chance to ask questions while working one to one with me. I know first hand that sometimes students are shy and don’t want to ask questions in front of the whole class, so working with me will give them the opportunity to challenge themselves. The artifacts that I will be collecting during my project will be pictures of myself working with the students and pictures of their work.
My mentor for my capstone project will be Mrs. Petrillo. She is the Math teacher at the high school at SMSA. She has been teaching math for more than 30 years. With my mentor I will be circulating the classroom assisting students with class work. At times I will be responsible for conducting small group instructions. Her email is [email protected], she is located in room 307. I predict that my learning stretch will be working with the students in small groups, because I know that I am going to be ready to answer questions that I might not have the answers for. This will also push me to review some of the concepts that I have learned in the past. I am excited to start this new experience and learn from it.
Sincerely,
De’ja Damas
